Painting Self Portraits

A couple of weeks ago was Rembrandt's birthday -- I have this great book (Let's Celebrate Today: Calendars, Events, and Holidays Second Edition) that tells about important historic events and famous people's birthdays (today, by the way, is Beatrix Potter's birthday, and Peru's Independence Day, among other things).  Anyway, my plan was to tell the boys a little bit about Rembrandt, show them some of his paintings, then break out the paint ourselves.  Well, it didn't happen on that day, or the next day, or the day after that.  Before I knew it a week had gone by, then 2 weeks ... well, you get the picture.  But we finally got around to it this week.

Photo Shoot

Every year at Christmas time I take a picture of the kids to send out with the cards.  Truth be told, I usually have to take many pictures in order to find one where everyone is looking in the right direction, eyes all open, mouths all closed, and everyone is looking relatively happy -- an adventure that gets harder and harder with each additional child.  What a job!  I have toyed with the idea of having them done professionally, but have never made the plunge ... until now!

Heather Rushton of Twin Bridges Photo met us in Hall's Harbour on a beautiful Saturday morning and courageously took on the task of trying to get the perfect family photo.  We had decided that we didn't want anything formal, so Heather followed us around snapping shots where she liked and making a few suggestions.  When the boys discovered that Star Wars was one of her favourite movies, she immediately had three new fans.  She changed the traditional smile inducing "cheeeeese!" to "EEEEEwok" and  "General Grieeeeeevous".  They were so impressed that she knew who these characters were and that she could join in their conversations.  We had a great time playing around, and occasionally looking up for a picture, and Heather was a lot of fun to work with.  Climbing around on the rocks at the beach and talking about Star Wars on a sunny Saturday morning; what could be better than that?

Take a look at some of the great pictures from that morning, and act surprised when you get your Christmas card this year!

Winter Oscars!

Inspired by a Family Circus comic that my mother in law cut out of the paper for us (I tried to find a link to it, but no luck), this is how the Oscars would have been awarded at our house.

Best Dressed
(and best "I'm too cool to smile" look)
Isaac found this clip on tie at Grampie's house last week and has been wearing it ever since!

Best Song

I know many of you have seen Owen's "12 Days of Christmas" video before, and I tried to link to it, but was unable to. Just imagine the 5th day of Christmas over and over and over again -- with a pocketful of money thrown in! (For those who may not have seen it, it's on Facebook under my videos if you are interested)

Best Make Up

Doctor, Doctor, my baby is covered in blood ... oh, wait, it's just beets!

Best Costumes

I really wanted the drag queen pirate that has been visiting our house to win, but these are the only guys who showed up, so they won by default.

Best Special Effects
Look at that boy flying toward the sun -- amazing!

Best Love Scenes
(rated G for all viewers)

So much love ... it's a tie!

I guess that with contenders like these, we're all winners!

Winter

I know that it's Friday and I'm working on finishing my project for that, but in the meantime I thought you might like to see what winter looks like at our house.  Happy Winter!

Our Lunch Guest

We had a visitor for lunch today.  I tried to be a good hostess by finding out more about our guest -- even if he did stop by unannounced -- and was very surprised by what I learned.

"Ben" is a small brown puppy whose favourite food is dog biscuits (cinnamon flavoured).  Luckily we were having cinnamon biscuits for lunch -- not of the dog variety, but they seemed to satisfy Ben and the boys -- phew!  He lives with "the kids" (never really got a clear picture of who these kids were or if I was expected to feed them too - I hope not!).  He has his own dog house, in some undisclosed location, that is equipped with many closets and a kitchen.

"There he goes under the table!"

Darn, I missed him.  Ben is very fast and very tricky I'm told.

His favourite game is Hide and Seek, and he always wins.  You see Ben also possesses the ability to turn invisible -- a handy skill when playing Hide and Seek.  The only way to find him is to bump into him.

"Look, there he is again!"

"Oh, he's turned invisible."

Rats!  But he must have been there because look at all those crumbs he left on the floor -- bad Ben!

Ben's most special attributes are his invisible, retractable arms.  They hide behind little brown doors on the side of his body (which, I was reassured, do not hurt him -- I must have looked concerned).  These doors look just like his fur, so you'd never know that they were there.  Wow, what I wouldn't give for an extra pair of arms some days!

When Ben fetches the paper (like all good dogs do) he brings the whole mailbox!  The boys seemed to find this part particularly entertaining.  Poor Ben then has to fix the mailbox, but with his secret invisible arms and his box of tools that he keeps in his dog house (like all good dogs), the job is a snap.

Well, since I totally failed to get a picture of Ben, I asked the boys to draw me a picture.  After all, if I ever meet Ben I want to know that it's him!  Owen decided that I was on my own, but Isaac and Aidan were happy to oblige.

This is Aidan's picture.  Ben looks rather fierce -- yikes!

Isaac's version looks tamer and would be welcome in my house anytime, as long as he cleans up those crumbs -- I swear they were not there before!
