Strolling around the Internet one day, I came across a blog post entitled "100 Things That Make Me Happy". What a great idea, I thought as I scanned the list, so Fridays are now dedicated to things that make me happy!
Things That Make Me Happy!
# 12 Adventure
# 12 Adventure
My dictionary defines adventure as: "an undertaking of a hazardous nature; a risky enterprise or an unusual experience marked by excitement or suspense". Hmmmm ... I guess that we would fall under the later definition, although life with kids is definitely an adventure that can be both hazardous and risky. I like the way this quotation from Lawrence Kutner sums it up.
"Childhood is an adventure both for children and for their parents. There should be freedom to explore and joy in discovery. The important discoveries for both parents and children seldom come at the points where the path is smooth and straight. It is the curves in that path to adventure that make the trip interesting and worthwhile."
Well, this week we were on a path that was far from smooth and straight, but it was definitely an adventure. The Cape Split trail is about 8 km to the top. I know that there is no way that we are going to make it to the top this year -- at least not without carrying the kids, but then I would need some serious medical attention when I got to the top! -- but we thought it would be a good place to go for a hike in the woods. We packed a picnic lunch and ate in a sunny field at the base of the trail.
Along the way, we: discovered there is still quite a bit of ice and snow in the woods, pondered how the running water makes trails through the ice, listened to a squirrel scold us for interrupting his game of tag with his friend, sipped cold, clean water from a little brook, found perfect hiking sticks and remembered to turn back before we got too tired. All in all it was a grand adventure and the boys are excited to go back again. Wonder how long it will be before we can get to the top?
Happy Adventuring!
